Marcus Lenz is born in 1969 in the industrial area of the Ruhr basin, in the west of Germany.
After school he studies Communication-Design at the Folkwang Hochschule (Uni/GH) in Essen. He finishes with a Diploma. During the studies in Essen he is accepted to study directing and film photography at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin(dffb). In Berlin he meets some of the masters of the industry: Wolfgang Becker, Reinhard Hauff, Slavomir Idziak, Michael Ballhaus and others become influential teachers. It is the time of the “Dogma” movement, which creates an atmosphere of change among the students.
Later Mike Leigh holds a workshop, whose methods of improvisation will influence Marcus very much.
After finishing the Berlin film academy he loves to direct and to work as a DOP in features and documentaries. The experience in both genres and crafts creates a special working style in each of them.
Marcus Lenz got scholarships and funds by BKM, DEFA, Media - Program of the European Union, Erasmus - Helsinki, Kuratorium Junger Deutscher Film, Ekran - Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing - Warsaw, Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg and others.
For the Portuguese feature film „Respirar“ he won the price for best photography at the Festival Iberico de Cine in Badajoz. His feature "Close" was screened in German cinemas won several prices and traveled to festivals around the world.
His last script"Tahiti Rose" (co-written by Lars Hubrich) got funded by Kuratorium Junger Deutscher Film and MEDIA and was proposed for the German Script Award.
